Kendo (kendō, lit. "sword way"), is a modern Japanese martial art, which descended from swordsmanship (kenjutsu) and uses bamboo swords. Kendo is a sport that places great importance on etiquette. A kendo contest begins with the contestants exchanging formal bows and ends with another bow. About 8 million people worldwide participate, 7 million of them in Japan. It is taught as part of the school physical education curriculum.
